Well here it is guys.  Jesse and I just booked this a couple days ago.

Date:
Sunday December 6th 2009.  Starts at 1pm and should take approx 3 hours.

Location:
Paradise Indoor Golf.  Red Deer Alberta.  #150, 6900 Tayler  Drive.  403-347-0400.  www.paradiseindoor.com

Format:
I will base this on 10 guys competing
We will be having 2 seperate cash events.  The first to start @ 1pm and the 2nd starting @ 2:30pm.  We have 2 sims booked.  One for warm-up and one for the competition.   Through random draw, everyone will hit 6 balls.  Then everyone is seeded in order from shortest to longest ball.   Round 2 will determine the top 4 hitters to go the cash round.  The top 4 seeds from round 1 will only hit in round 2 if they get out drove by the bottom 6 seeds.  This will keep things moving time-wise.  For the finals the Top 5 hitters will hit in order of the seeding from round 2, with the longest hitter getting the hammer.  6 balls each to determine the cash pay-out.  Each round hitting is done in pairs, 3 balls alternating.

Cost:
$100 per hitter per event.  Again we would like to have 2 events.  Rental of the 2 sims will have to come out of the pot.  Rental of 2 sims for 3 hours will be $240.  So if we have 10 guys per event, and 2 events, thats a $2000 pot, minus sim rental leaves us with $1760 or $880 payout per event.

I would like to pay out 5 of the 10 guys per event.

Based on 10 guys the payout per event will be:
1st - $400
2nd - $220
3rd - $160
4th - $100

Thats it, post here if your in.  Just bring your entry cash the day of. This will be fun and casual.  The guys at paradise are great, and they have a great bar there too.  Also I would like to keep the number of guys to a max of 10 per event, as were time/space limited.  Also let me know of any changes that may help make this event run smoother.

Also Jesse and I are going to get a profile set up on the simulators that is Long Drive friendly.  It will have proper roll and carry to simulate Alberta.  The grid will probably be 100 yds wide, just because we can't really change that.  So every ball that is inside the white lines on the virtual driving range will count.  Balls go pretty staight on the simulator anyway.

I'm in for both events.  I have hit on that sim and it definitely needs some tweaking to see reasonable results but it should be a lot of fun.  Thanks to jesse and rhino for setting this stuff up, it's nice to be able to stay in the swing of things during the holidays.  I've seen a couple of vids of how the Euro's do these events and it looks like good times, not sure if us canucks will give the phil naylor kind of reaction to a killed ball but I'm looking forward to some fun.

See ya on the 6th.

Is there room for a lefty to stand inside the sim with a REALLY long and upright swing??   Grin  .....Seriously.

How about teeing a ball up?  Is that an issue.  I know that is my biggest pet peave for simulators.  As long as I can tee a ball up like I would outdoors (i.e., 4" tee just barely in the ground), then I am happy.

How about keeping the payout to only 3 or 4?? You don't really want to pay out 1 for of every 2 spots, do u??  (i'll finish 4th!  LOL)

To pay $100 dollars for a chance at 360 doesn't sound as good as I thought it'd be.  Especially for $50 worth of gas there and back.  Sure, it'll be fun as hell, but I think top 5 payout is too much.

The event sounds just like the 3rd event at the western canadians, and that was a great way to run things.

Let me know.........I think I'm in as long as I can swing in there.

Shawn,

There should be lots of room for a lefty, I'll check this week.  I know I can swing in there no problem, I just move my tee up a little forward.  These sims have alot more room than the older style ones. The sims are pretty smart and there is a fairly large area you can tee it up.  Yes you can use a normal tee, I stick a 4" in the crack between the rough and short grass.  You should be able to stick one into the rough grass and have it stand up.

The pay-out is not set in stone, we can definetly make some changes.  Maybe still five guys into the finals but pay out the top 4?

Was also thinking of making the first round 8 balls, and the second 4 balls, just because 5 guys may not have to hit in the 2nd round.  And leave the finals at 6 balls.

Keep the suggestions coming guys.

Hey Ryan,

I'd like to go, but need to figure out a bbsitter for my little one.  If I can make it, I'll be there.

Thanks for organizing.  If all went well, it would be great to see an indoor league set up down the road.  I.e. $500 or so for the season, multiple events, on-going leaderboard with payouts at the end.

Good luck,
Greg - Calgary

Blenkhorn said he is out of town working.

Jesse, did u contact all the others that were in the Wester Canadians?

This thing should fill up fast.  Greg Stirret said he "might" be able to attend the second one, and is trying to work things out so that he can attend both.

What kind of a plan do we have in place if the ball is not read at all?? I heard a rumour that these simulators missed about 9/10 balls that are hit over 200MPH ball speed.  Is that correct?  We need to have a contingency plan in place if someone "kills" one, and the machine come up blank.  Re-hit??

Thanks,
Shawn

If any ball gets missed (other than a shank miss hit) the hitter will just get another ball.  From my experience these ABout Simulators are really good at picking up the ball.  The only trouble I've ever had was at golf town when one of the 2 simluators had a miss-aligned camera from someone hitting it.  That simulator would miss most balls above 190mph.  Where as the other one at Golf Town would work fine. I've never had a ball missed at Paradise, it has missed some low miss-hits, maybe 2 or 3, and I know it handles a 200mph ball fine.

BTW these seem pretty accurate, I've hit on other simulators that show 200+mph when it was probably 185-190 ish.

Sounds good guys!

I made a post on longdrivers.com forum as well. There were a bunch of people that wanted to compete in Alberta 1 week after the Western Canadians. Going to see if we can get these guys to come out of the woods! Lol.

Everything looks to be rolling along pretty good.

How awesome would it be to have 3 Smash Factory Indoor cash competitions during the winter and 3 Smash Factory outdoor cash competitions (Spring, Summer, Fall) out at Sylvan.  If we all support this stuff, 2010 could be a great year for longdrive in Western Canada.

That sounds great Ryan! If that is the case, I think we need to find a way to compensate Jesse for all his work as well. These events don't just run themselves.

I know I will help next year with the grid setup etc out at Sylvan, If we can have 2 or 3 guys help out next year that would take a little load of Jesse.  The out door comps take a bit of setup, this Indoor stuff seems pretty easy so far.
