Sounds like a great starting or RESTARTing point at this stage of the game too. Very well written letter and approach and hopefully between the western'rs and Mr Scott Tompkins ---sooner than later you will have a date and more on the table for us all to consider and plan around .
Thx for the effort and time it takes

Sounds promising to me, and thanks for getting the ball rolling on this early. I haven't really been involved in LD for very long but I certainly appreciate the effort people are putting in to keep this going. I don't know a lot about LD events either but I was wondering if you could somehow have two pools in a tournament. By this I mean you would do some form of round robin and then how you placed would determine which side of the tournament you would compete on. This way some of the newer competitors and possibly amateurs would not have to go against the big guns like Blenkhorn, Sadlowski, Cleverdon and could possibly still win their respective pool. Since this isn't a qualifier for the worlds it may be an option. I'm not sure if I explained it well enough I just know that the volleyball team I coached competed in a tournament of this format, we are a small 3A school and there were lots of big 4A schools from Edmonton in the tournament but through the round robin we were placed on the consolation side and ended up winning it and the girls loved it, to them it felt like they won the tournament, and to me it was a great way to be competitive in a big tournament for my girls. Long post, sorry that's enough blah, blah, blah.

July 4th/5th or 11th/12th.
Does that word for all or anyone?
These dates work GREAT for me!
We need to get a location 1st of all........then dates............then, we have ACTION!
Jesse......PM me or e-mail me @
shawn.robinson@shaw.ca
I have one concern.........last time I was in Sylvain Lake, the hole that we used was not long enough if there was little to no wind..........is this the same hole that was used about 6 or 7 years ago?
Thanks,

I would be in. I turn 45 this year, so I guess it is Seniors for me. Time to dust of the gear and see if I still have a LD swing.

Either dates work well for me Shawn.... last time I competed at Sylvan, they had the events on the left side of the driving range. While the set-up was good, with a strong wind, I'm not sure if the length is sufficient.
Anyone else know how long the grid is at Sylvan?

I am in Vegas until April 7th, I'll see what I can do when I get back, but i am interested. I have hit balls since my surgery, and i get sore so it will depend on how things are going.
I also called Southland, they were interested last year, and let me tell you, the guy was more than a little upset at the treatment he received last year, so was the organizer at the event last year. In my opinion, we need more diplomacy.
Good for you Jesse for looking into things.
Put me down for a tentative right now....I'll get more info asap when I get home.
Also, Riverbend Golf COurse and Recreation area might be interested, I have a good relationship with the pro there.

here is the latest....
Scott,
Well I guess the first task would be to set a date. Either the first or second weekend in July seems to be the best overall for most of the guys. How does that mesh with your plans for the course? It will be a one day event with the possibility of a smaller, quick cash grab either the day before or after. Of course we will require some set-up time for the grid and launch area. How long of grid is possible? There has been minor speculation that with a little wind, it is not long enough....just curious.
I haven't really talked about this to the other guys but I was thinking we could try and fill the times between rounds and whatever other spare time we have throughout the day with letting whoever wants to, hit on the grid. Something like 3 balls for $10 or whatever. Buddies can compete amongst each other or some guys just want to know how far they can drive a ball. It would help to offset the cost a bit, as well as get the crowd a little more involved. Just an idea...

Hi Jesse,
The grid is 390 yds, no one has hit it out yet but that doesn't mean they won't. The major concern I have is what the cost to us is. In the latter years of the REMAX event our cost was zero. The LDA proposed that we sell the practice balls for full price, which of course would have given us a tidy profit. I need to know what your company's format and plans are. If you want to have the event here we can and will accommodate you, and host a fantastic event with you.
Let me know.

thoughts? ideas? should we use the same format that they have planned for the RCD in Quebec?
..or develop one with Hutch's pools integrated? ...any and all ideas will be helpful....

....just throwin this one out there....
what about having a 4 man best ball cash tourney on the saturday and the event on the sunday?....we could have golfers sign up in threesomes and complete the team with one of the guys competing in long drive....nothing too complicated just a basic best round wins....maybe pay out the top 3.... would anyone be interested in participating? if so, i can get the word out to a decent size group of guys and see what kind of response i get......
....has anyone done this in the past? pros? cons? ...i know it adds to the workload setting up and the weekend itself, i'm just trying to find ways to get more people involved in the event, and ultimately long drive

i'm hoping for a little feedback guys.......in regards to my previous posts about format, crowd involvement and so on....
The event is going to be on
July 11th, 2009 at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake, Alberta.
The format will be similar to the RCD Classic. I will post details by the end of this week.

Hi Jesse,
Good news on the event. During the earlier days of this thread, a couple others with significant world class experience expressed interest in being on the organizing committee. I'll PM you the details. They may or may not still be interested, but its worth dropping them a line.
Thanks, good luck!

sounds good to me. Any chance for a battle of Alberta or something similar. Northern Alberta vs. Southern Albertans or some kind of team vs team like Can vs US at the Canadians. As for clarification on the pool format, it's just like any other slo-pitch tournament or whatever and I had originally thought that you could host another event and hopefully draw some new blood into LD so next year we could possibly get some qualifiers. Not sure if it is a good idea just thought I would throw it out there and get some feedback because it certainly draws alot of non-competitive people into tournaments in other sports and you could even have 3 divisions, professionals 350 + yards, competitive 320 - 350 or so yards, and amateur 300 yards or so, just tossing those out there not meant to mean anything. Once again thanx for all the effort and isn't everyone in the north going nuts right now because it was 12 degrees today and you couldn't hit golf balls? I'm thinking of driving down to Calgary just to hit a few buckets, spring fever is getting me!
later gators.
