I have a question.....
as i stated previous, my lil cousin is now in MMA here locally. I am helping as much as I can with a bummed knee, moslty I assist on striking as that was my strong point.
He is about 5'8-5'9, and weighs in at an impressive 195 lbs. He is NOT fat however. He is lean as lean can be for his size. My question is this..... In my opinion, he should try and drop some weight. at 195 lbs, won't he be fighting a much taller opponent?? for example, when I fought, my weight was 225 ish, and I am 6 foot. My opponents most times were 4-5 inches taller than me. Not that it mattered to me, but I want my cousin to gain some experience, and learn where he has a chance to fight an equal opponent. I believe on the UFC if you are weighing in at 195, you are sometimes over 6 feet?
Maybe I am just nervous, I just want him to not get his ass kicked all the time.

yikes.....your right i did fight at 205 but im only 5'11...now i did drop weight from 225 so i was stronger but i was def short for even 205. 185 he would prolly do best at then once you go to a serious camp they will prolly push him to 170.....
st.peirrie weighed 187 going in the octagon.
i always sucked as fair down as i could go....i went from 220 to 185 i was a monster....but we weighed in the night before and that SOB never showed up fight night.....that was my last fight with 3 kids i wasnt going to deal with that dumb Sh!t anymore.

That is what i thought.....
He trains with Jason McDonald, so I know he knows what he is doing, i just hope he is teaching right now, and then they will talk cutting later.....
I know right now, i am 235. I hated cutting, so I never did it, but boy did i have to take a ton of punishment to win some fights that if i cut, and did what Brock did (gain some if not all back) i would have been a lot better.
I will talk to my cousin and continue to train him with McDonald, and see what happens.
Thanks jbair12

Tim,
195 is a catchweight in between the middleweight (185lb) and light heavyweight (205lb) divisions. Your cousin's height/weight might be a disadvantage if he fights in light heavy because some of those guys are 6'2"-6'3" and up. Because you say he's really lean at 195 he'd probably have a tough time going any lighter than the middleweight division. Dropping down to 170lbs from a lean 195lbs would take a toll on him. Sort of like what happened to Roy Jones Jr after he beat up John Ruiz to win the Heavyweight boxing title. He was RIPPED at 199lbs and lost 20-30lbs (can't remember the exact amount) after the fight and had lost a lot of strength and stamina. Where does your cousin live? Has he fought in any events? My buddy Mac won TUF and has had 3 fights in the UFC, one he dominated, the second he got laid on by Clay Guida for 3 rounds and then he got subbed on 2/4 by Josh Neer (not what I wanted to see).
Good luck with your cousin's fighting career, tell him to be careful!

I will just have to say that the BJ that I saw the other night . . . He should be done! GSP totally beat his ass!! I have never seen BJ scared but he was scared the other night. On the other hand, have you ever seen GSP so ripped? WOW! Who is gonna stop him?

I read an interview with BJ. He said he didn't remember anything after the 2nd round.
One of the most amazing things to me was how easily GSP passed BJ's guard (over and over). He is something else.
