hey guys, i've never competed in a longdrive comp but am going to the palacerigg comp to spectate and as you know am in the middle of getting a 48 inch driver made up for future reference and one of the pro golfer/teachers at the strathclyde driving range hamilton (ian hanna) is competing with my driver!
however what i would like to know is when ian swings and sends the ball into oblivion he is using a standard pro golfer driver swing yet when you watch zuback and fister etc their swings do look exaggerated...is that what longdriving is... an exaggerated pro golfer driver swing?
the competition starts at 10.30 but will the drivers be practising before that? should i arrive earlier to observe?
can ian turn up on the day pay and sign on/ how much is it to compete?

hi marco,
generally the longer the club, the wider youre stance, and the further away you stand from the ball, also the whole thing is more dynamic with a bigger shoulder turn, the club tends to drop below parallel at the top of the swing a lot more than in traditional golf, the rest varies from golfer to golfer, flat swing, upright swing etc.

its 5 pounds for 6 balls, you can usually squeeze in a couple of sets between 10.30 and one o clock. After that it's the final, provided you qualify.
you can put youre name down from ten onwards, there is a driving range at palacerigg but that doesnt mean all the competitors will use it. there's rarely practice facilities at long drive events, sometimes there's driving nets.
nine times out of ten the competitors outnumber the spectators!

thanks jfk, i can understand having a wider stance with a longer driver but i'm assuming that it cant be too wide as i would imagine that the overly wider stance would interfere with weight shifting on the back and down swing?

ye thats right you cant make a proper weight shift if its too wide, start with youre stance a bit too wide then gradually dial it in till youre happy with it, same goes for distance from the ball, i think fister stands quite far away from it? some LDers  like their arms hanging down relaxed, others like to stick them out further to encourage a better shoulder turn, its a highly personal thing that requires experimentation, just remember the ball never lies marco, where it stops is the acid test, find out what works for you.    hope that helped,    john

thanks john, talking about distance from the ball have you observed benjamin tetz on youtube?
his arms are almost 45 degs to his body ie his arms and driver shaft are in a straight line!
how do you rate him?

i wish i had his power! ye it seems he has a set up to correct a slice, once he has that in place he just pulls the trigger, its a pure longdrive swing! my favourite longdriver is jamie sadlowski, silky smooth and not the biggest guy in the world, 5,11 and 12 and a half stone maybe?  great speed and timing, and very athletic, i think 2 years from now he could be the daddy!

Just competed with and against JAMIE this weekend at the CANADIAN NATIONALS and he had a # of NAMES in the sport from all the past years going wow--unreal---this kid rips it---incredible---and many others using terms not fit for lil kids eyes!!!   HE IS ALREADY LONG DRIVEs FUTURE and can flat out KILL A GOLF BALL!!!

JAMIE SADLOWSKI WILL NOT BE BEAT(this takes nothing away from JZ, Dobbyn, Wolter, Mobleyect ect...)----if he is in the grid !!!   And new NATIONAL CHAMPION of CANADA  he simply BEAT THE FIELD which I overheard many TOP LD'rs as well as past World Champs say is as good a field as your ever going to assemble together outside of the worlds!   ( if ya dont beleive me---look closely at the list of COMPETITORS and notice  at least 5 EX WORLD and REIGNING WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!  Not to mention the top tier guys in all the LDA $ events ect ect...

not only is he the best out there at this time----he's  also got a fantastic smile, personality and approach to the game, sportsmanship and marketability!   He is everything LONG DRIVE needs at this point in time---to go above and beyond where we are currently.

WELL DONE JAMIE!!!

Hey Little Cassius,

Don't you go stirring up our brothers across the pond.  You've got a little cutie smile too, even without the kilt.  Hasn't anyone ever told you?

its 50 inches total club length, measured vertically, if you have a club with a 48 inch shaft that measures more than 50 vertically then you will have to trim it,  if i'm wrong on this then please chip in. (but i think i'm right)

The smile leads and lends to my MARKETABILITY part of the reply----you were the one who was thinkin out in left field dude!~ Kiss    you can SWING THAT WAY--i'll stick to swingin LD clubs thanks anyhow!

He is a GREAT KID and the future of LD!!!!   With two world JR titles under his belt a 3rd in his first year as an OPEN competitor and plenty of talant for a LONG RUN  as the future world champ---if its not this year---its not long away for him!

50" total length with the head on the floor and the shaft directly to the wall is SIMILAR to the USGA 48" rule(but they mesure differntly and its open to more confussion.)  Just stand it against the floor and against the wall ---if the top edge of yer grip isnt below the 50" mark---yer illegal ---so long as CAP of yer grip is below that 50" mark yer good to hit in LDA , Remax events--so long as they are using the 50" club limit!

Hope that is of help---also on LDA site under clubs and legal club info

Hey Little Cassius,

I tried to defuse the situation but clearly did not. I know you know what you are doing but it's a different life across the pond and you need to know how they play. A guy on the aeroplane to the USA wised me up:  "Stick to the speed limit, if stopped keep your hands on the wheel and don't get out of the vehicle unless invited, do not overtake school buses when they are parked with children, and do not make saucy jokes, particularly about the other team."

Large parts of the two countries are occupied by God fearin' folk where family values are high on the agenda.  We tend to get brainwashed with the sh*t we see on tv and gangsters and pervs. simply are not crawling out of the woodwork like they seem to be here, and tv leads us to believe.  Watch the Dallas news in a morning and its largely about traffic delays, not hold ups of liquor stores.

So, expect every guy across the pond to be a God fearing heterosexual Christian, with high family values, and you will not go far wrong. Smiles are smiles, and babies are picked up because they are beautiful, not to steal. Life across the pond in lots of rural areas is largely how it used to be here before the rot set in. My foreign wife of seven years still cannot relate to my 'humour' or me to hers.  Attempted international humour often falls flat unless it is on a simple cartoon level.

I know that you are a red blooded heterosexual but our brothers may misread you if you don't watch out for those school buses.  No more saucy jokes / comments or I'll ask your parents to stop your pocket money  before our overseas brothers form a lynching party. But a Christian one of course.

Your Great Uncle,

Viper
