CJ Morely Wins Season Finale in Costa Mesa

A small but elite field of long drive specialists competed in the Costa Mesa Season Finale. Brettt Flowers, Robert Franklin, Jim Heflin, CJ Morely, Lynn Ray, Vince Rivera and Mike Sanders teed it up at Costa Mesa Golf and Country Club on Saturday, September 30.

Competing under sunny skies and hitting into a steady 10 - 15 mile per hour headwind, conditions were fair but difficult. Heavy costal onshore flow with temperatures in the mid 70s and 75% humidity limited ball flight. Competition was contested using the new Bridgestone E5 golf ball.

Franklin, Heflin, Morely and Sanders advanced in the double elimination contest with drives of 325, 318, 328 and 315 respectively. In the finals Mike Sanders and Jim Heflin went to a three ball shoot out for third place. Sanders won third prize with a 306 yard drive after Heflin could not find the grid.

Robert Franklin and CJ Morely were also forced into a shoot out when both players best balls were less than three inches apart. Morely drove the ball 322y 8" and Franklin 322y 6". Morely took first prize in the shoot out with another 322y drive besting Franklin's effort of 318y.

Purse $1,350 (entry fees $1,275)

First Place - CJ Morely $700
Second Place - Robert Franklin $400
Third Place - Mike Sanders $250

Way to go C.J.!!!!!
This young man has announced his arrival to the open division. In his first year up from the juniors he has qualified for the World Championships at the Dallas District. I'm guessing this is the first professional win for him (Costa Mesa), and I must say I'm not surprised. He knows how to handle himself, manage his time between rounds, and of course his swing and mental game.
Get it from Dad? His dad being a former Yonex long drive team member and WORLD RECORD holder back in the day of the smaller heads. Its obvious to me he has had some great coaching.

LDGA guys, thanks for the opprotunity to compete in an event.  It was fun and a great expierience. It was a nice day to hit and the hitters were a bunch of great guys. Too bad I didnt make it a few more yards to get there to the last round. But, oh well. So when do we see the slide show or video out there? Keep in touch and cant wait for more events.
