2019 reflections and the 2020 season
« on: November 05, 2019, 08:43:03 PM »
World Long Drive Hitters,

As we head into this off-season, I want to say thank you to the World Long Drive community for your commitment, dedication and support of the sport this season. From seeing the first ball of the season hit in Yucca Valley to the final ball at the World Long Drive Championship and the hundreds of conversations in between, it continues to be an amazing ride getting to know so many of you. In my first season in this role, I couldn’t have been more welcomed, and that is appreciated.

Below are some quick notes to celebrate a great season, and continue to build for the future.

Congratulations! – on behalf of World Long Drive and Golf Channel, I want to congratulate Kyle Berkshire, Chloe Garner and Jeff Crittenden for earning titles at the 44th World Long Drive Championship. It was an incredible competition and all three represent the sport so well! We have a seat saved for you at next year’s Champions Dinner along with the greats who came before you.

World Long Drive Championship – we have positive results from a viewership and reach perspective as well. Below are some quick facts about the event:
The Tuesday, Sept. 3 TV broadcast on Golf Channel was up 27% from 2018
The Wednesday, Sept. 4 TV broadcast was up 21% from 2018; tied 2017 for the second-most watched WLDC broadcast (2013 was #1); and tied 2013 for the most-watched ever for 25-54 year old viewers (that is a key stat as we aim to appeal to a younger audience!)
Social media impressions were up 70% over 2018 and video views were up 171%

The Season – the sport has so much to be proud of during the 2019 season. Below are a few milestones that stood out.
2019 will have more TV hours than ever before with more than 100+ hours of WLD programming across Golf Channel and NBCSN (with an NBC broadcast to come in December)
World Long Drive Championship airing in 60+ countries
Two appearances on the SportsCenter Top 10
All six events broadcast on Sky Sports
First-time the top 8 women featured on the TV broadcast
Five athlete meetings held throughout the season
Rule change of no points for OB sets
New events… Exchange Celebrating Service: Fort Jackson and the ROC City Rumble
New corporate partners … Athalonz, Dick’s Sporting Goods, The Exchange, Lifelock

The Off-Season – this will be a critical off-season to execute our strategic plan. Through conversations, surveys and in-person meetings you have provided valuable feedback. Below are some key priorities:
2020 Event Schedule – We recognize that hitters benefit from knowing our schedule in advance from a planning and potential sponsor standpoint. Last year, we announced the new season schedule on December 6 (PGA Show week the year prior), and we’re making every effort to target a similar timeline, if not sooner. Once things are solidified with event partners etc., it is our priority to communicate our 2020 schedule to hitters as soon as we possibly can.
Golf Ball – we are working to solidify our long-term future for the WLD competition ball. Once we have an update on this front, we will provide an update to hitters to be able to plan accordingly.
Anti-Doping – we will unveil the program at the WLD Kickoff in Orlando on Monday, Jan. 20
Gambling – we are working on a long-term strategy for legalized betting on long drive events with an update to come at the WLD Kickoff in January
Event Structure – we are reviewing the world ranking points system, global event structure and how to create more opportunities to earn points in the future
Code of Conduct – we will update and implement a policy that provides clear direction on expectations and clarity on enforcement
Business – we are doing an intensive review of all our expenses to find more efficiencies

Key Dates – below are some key dates:
World Long Drive Kickoff – Monday, Jan. 20 from Noon-5 pm at Topgolf Orlando
Top 100 Men + All Women Hitters; agenda and invite to come separately
World Long Drive Global Summit – Feb. 4-5 in London
Note: The Global Summit is targeted at anyone who wants to host a global long drive event outside of North America
Please let me know of potential global partners to receive the invitation

We have a lot to celebrate and you should be proud of this sport and the season. We look forward to growing it together!

Matt
