British Open
« on: July 23, 2018, 07:43:53 AM »
It's the 2nd best event behind the Masters IMO. But why are courses there so ugly? A run of the mill public course over here looks far better than the great courses there. For the record I'm a big EURO fan when it comes to the Ryder Cup, but you couldn't pay me to go play there. Almost looks like they build courses on top of a old nuclear waste dump.

Subtle beauty, is often missed by Americans.

Have you ever played links golf in Scotland?

No. Don't care to. I drive thru Shinnecock hills everyday to work. Another ugly layout. I don't even know what links golf means.

I don’t know why so many Americans blew it on the final day either!

Oh and it’s called THE OPEN.   not the British open, what’s next, the American masters?

Golf was started on land that wasn’t suitable for anything else, links, then through time you had ‘Disneyland versions popping up.

I have been told that there is no greater disappointment for a golfer than to play the Old Course at St. Andrews.  Apparently it is a massive let down.

The UK as a whole suffers this thing you’re talking about, functionality over beauty.

Example..  a historical masterpiece could have a nasty old factory built right next door, it’s an issue that’s slowly getting addressed, but it’s also one of the reasons Britain had the biggest empire the world had ever seen, the sun never set on it at one point, bad food and aesthetics etc didn’t seem to matter.

There’s a heatwave in Scotland at the moment, I live in Scotland, about an hours drive from ST Andrews, I was pretty shocked how bad Carnoustie looked, my own locals are dried out quite a bit, I may post a video of a nice looking one I play once or twice a week.

Castles with nothing around them but lochs and huge mountains look amazing, literally 45 mins from my home, but everything else can suffer from little planning or attention to looks and surroundings, sad but true.

No probs, you guys have some of the nicest courses in the world, no doubt about it, Loch Lomond golf club here is a bit more ‘American style’ very pretty in sunshine.

Yes George I was brought up in Lancashire, England, I've played all The Open links courses at least once and Birkdale and Lytham St Annes many times.

They are all unique in their own way and you're right, they don't look as nice as some of our parkland courses like Wentworth & Sunningdale.

I've heard several Americans describe the Old Course at St Andrews as a "cabbage patch", Carnoustie looked burnt out but i wouldn't want to play it in December ;)

I'm an Aaaannniiiimmmaaaallll!

Thanks.....   So my question would be? Why do they look the way they look? Do they want the burned out, disease filled fungus dog track look? That's a serious question by the way?

Hi George

There’s not a simple answer but I can point you in the right direction.

Golf in Scotland is very conservative, women shouldn’t play it etc. Keeping true to the roots of the sport, not changing the looks, it goes on.

There’s one course for every 10k people in Scotland, highest in the world, declining numbers playing it, so tight budgets.

I’m with you, I don’t like links courses and don’t play them, I prefer parkland courses, I played a nice one today, hope that helps.

At least you could still distinguish the greens from the fairways which wasn't the case at Chambers Bay!
