Round robin points format?
« on: May 14, 2018, 12:32:28 PM »
In the round robin format why is winning a group given such a premium in points. 200 compared to 100 for 2nd, 3rd 50 and 4th 25. Wouldn’t it make more sense to win get 200, 2nd 125, 3rd 75, and 4th 50. I’m no mathematician but seems the reward is too high when you win a group.

Then take the top 4 and do 1 more set where top 3 make Worlds.

It’s to complicated but what about a % based point breakdown
Where the distance the top hitter in the group won by is factored in
And so forth
If the winner dominated his opponents he gets rewarded accordingly
And if he only won by a yard the point drop off isn’t substantial

Great plan, turn a boring spectator sport into a maths challenge

what beasty said + there are way too many times where a ridiculous kick is the reason why somebody won by a huge amount of yards.

Simpler is better. I’m just curious who came up with this. On the surface it looks like someone said double the points at each level.  What this doesn’t take into account is how top heavy the points are.  Making up 175 points if you finish 4th in a group is almost imposssible.  The whole idea was to make sure the longest hitters got through.  Take for example Kody Zureck in Phx.  He was crushing the comp then finished 4th in a group and finished 4th in the qualifier. If points weren’t so top heavy the longer guys could survive a bad set or two.

Can it be done without awarding points? The points seem to be the concern.

Not sure how it could be done without points unless you took order of finish and added them together with lowest score winning which would make it more top heavy. It just doesn’t make sense to get twice as many points as the person who finished 2nd in a group.  I could see 50 or 75 more but if first gets double the points as second they should get three times as many for third etc....  which makes it worse. Say 1st was 200, 2nd 150, 3rd 100 and 4th 50 then realistically more players would be in the competition come later rounds. As it stands today guys are mathematically eliminated too quickly.

Seems like make things more complicated, sraight double elimination is hard enough to follow btw

why do the points have to be such ridiculous value?  175

why not

10 / 6 / 4 / 1

why so frikkin complicated always

Beasty,

That could work except winning a set shouldn’t be 10x as valuable as finishing 4th.  You would never catch up after 1 bad set. If you did 10/7/5/4 this would be more realistic. The RR format was designed to be more fair to competitors.  It is way too skewed to the winner of a set

As it stands today it is 8x more valuable to win a set then finish 4th.  At the very minimum it should only be 4x as valuable.  This system is bad.

10/7/5/4 is the same as 6/3/1/0

You are guaranteed at least 4th place before you even hit so no need to award any points for that.

Make it 3/2/1/0 or 30/20/10/0 or 300/200/100/0 ...... doesn't matter as long as the proportions are the same.

200/100/50/25 is the same as 175/75/25/0

You are right as it stands now the points are skewed heavily in favor of winning a group, but then again you could argue this is how it should be  ;)

That would definitely be a fairer way to score the format.

When I ran my events the point system was

400 1st
300 2nd
200 3rd
100 4th

ZERO for going OB

I don't think you should get any points for going OB

The format for Lynn's events always seemed fair...and the events were always well attended. Most of the guys
were in it until the last round or two...with very few complaints. It was a "family" run event and you knew it.
Naturally, the purse was paid out on the spot.  Not that I get a vote, but I would second the motion for...
400,300,200,100 with zero for OB.

That would be an excellent change to the points system. But there are growing pains in all sports. What’s it been.... 20 years. Lol
