SWEDEN’S EDBLAD HITS GLORY AT SCOTTISH RECORD DAY
for immediate release 22 June 2005
RE/MAX Scotland Long Drive Championship 2005
in association with Hertz
The opening round of the 2005 RE/MAX European Long Drive Championship was blessed with spectacular sunshine and drew a bumper crowd of spectators at the fabulous St Andrews Bay Golf Resort and Spa. However, a stiff headwind would prove to make big hitting a difficult proposition. The strong field of competitors in the open division included most of the 2004 European series champions, including European No 1 Paul Slater who last October enhanced his reputation by reaching the last 16 in the 2004 World Championships. It was also very encouraging to see so many new players in the field hitting long drives in competition for the first time.
Open Division Results (Top 5 qualify for RE/MAX European Final 2005)
1. Marcus Edblad (Sweden) 329yds
2. Adam Stacey (England) 315yds
3. Rowan Myles (Scotland 308yds
4. Patrik Andersson (Sweden) 305yds
5. Phil Naylor (England) 304yds
6. Paul Evans (Wales) 301yds
Hertz Longest Drive of the Day
Cristian Sterning (Sweden) 334yds
In the Senior Division, Karl Woodward and Jim Cliff both gained qualification for the RE/MAX European Long Drive Final 2005 with solid performances of 283yds and 277yds respectively in testing conditions.
Later in the day European Long Drive exponents Phil Naylor, Ian Cahill and Cristian Sterning all managed to break official Guinness World Records at St Andrews as part of the Charity World Record Golf Day.
Cristian broke the One Handed distance record with a stunning carry of 282yds, Phil Naylor completed a 500 yard par 5 hole in a record time of 1min 52secs then Ian Cahill caught a Naylor drive of 200yds.
