I find when I bulk up and put a lot of size on my chest I have way less flexibility and can't turn nearly as well.. Sure strength is helpful but if your super strong you normally put on a lot of size. As long as you keep your flexibility, it can't hurt.. Chest strength I don't think is a key to a long drive.. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Correct me if I'm wrong. It does some but not too much. Bench press is a combination of many muscles working together to complete the exercise. Years ago I really hit the weight hard, 5 day/week ~1 hr for about 6 months. I increased my bench from 215 to 285, that gave me about 20 yards. I had to increase my bench 70lbs to get 20yds. That isn't a great trade off in my opinion. I know that my triceps, legs and shoulders were also a lot stronger too so I think it was more the other muscles getting me to the increased yardage.

Well, I'm new to LD so i can't compare numbers... But... When i played football and could easily bench 350-400 "depending on reps" but did notice when i played golf my swing was not the same as my chest became too big and just couldn't turn my shoulders/arms properly. Of course that was when i was 6'4 285lbs "in shape" Now I'm 245 and feel i can hit it further then i ever good. bigger.. Most peoples bodies grow different and for me, my chest got too big and it interupted my swing but others may not have the same problem. All depends on your body and how it reacts to weight training.

One year Patrik Andersson WON both the European LD Champonship and the Swedish LD Champonship...he WON the World's Strongest Golfer Championship last year and didn't qualify for the World's RE/MAX...that should tell you something!

Do more LDers bench press 400 plus Or swing 140 plus ?
More than likely a person benching 400+ is also doing other exercises that contribute to overall strength. I don't know of any guy benching 400+ that is not doing other body parts that exceed 400+ lbs in strength. Are they fast? some. could they be trained to be fast? OOOOHHHHHHH YEAHHHH. A friend who placed in the World's Stongest Man Competitions is one of the fastest guys I know. At 6'4" 345 and can dunk a basketball on a 10' rim, this a guy that could easily swing 140 on a trackman with a couple lessons. Hitting balls, well that is another subject. If he can throw 10 kegs weighing 50lbs over a 13ft fence in 40 seconds he can learn to swing and is generating way more force than JS. There will be doubters about this, but swing speed is about physics, and speed can be learned from force production if the correct technique is learned. The bench press is not a golf swing, but strength, power, and speed, have a strong correlation. Training does that.

not many lders do 400+. To get to 400, some serious and dedicated training is needed.

i don't care if you can or can't bench any certain #.... we are not pushing over mountains, its still a stick sport. that being said i think it has to do with the person. Bash brothers, pujols, fielder jr those were think big guys who could and can crush a ball. it depends on ur body.

To put the bench press = yardage debate in a another light, last year I torn the labrum in my right shoulder and then torn the bicep tendon off after that. Had surgery (bicep tenodesis) and could barely bench 100 lbs 3 months later. Hit in a local 3 months post surgery and hit 370 and was putting 145+ on an SSR at that time. It's been a year now and it still bothers me on heavy chest presses but my SSR numbers are 155 and 400 yds is possible again. Hit 431 in the NC regional last year, but so did everyone else! ha. I know that high bench press numbers don't correspond to hitting the grid either.
