So I have messed around with lead tape on driver heads but could someone give me the skinny on butt weighting a club with weighting around the grip end? What is the purpose? Does it help? Does anyone do it?

It lowers the overall swing weight of the club. It can help, but it's a balance. Try turning your club around and swinging it by the head. With the majority of the weight near your hands, you can swing the club faster. The only drawback is the more weight you add to the butt end of the club, the heavier the entire club gets, so like I said, it's about finding a balance that works for you. Google 'golf club counterweight' to learn more.
