Just recently started to play golf again havent played in about 10years ex hockey player . SS is 113-117 range. Trying to get into the mid/higher 120's . I have been doing some hit training, as well as the speed chain . Just curious what guys have picked up real world #'s by training is 5-10 mph increase attainable after some time/training .

Max...I would like to see Andreas (and/or Aaron M.) answer this question...They have increased their speed incredibly over the last couple of years. I know your looking for most anyone that knows the answer...of course. But, Andreas and Aaron M. have really increased dramatically and would really like to hear their take.

Justin Moose seemed to jump to another gear this year compared to last as well. If he has any tips, I would love to hear them! I only need around 30 mph more to catch Ryan Winther!

For me it was yoga this year... flexability is key to anything athletic.

Yes it is very possible to pick up 5 mph or more over time. I was new this year and was around your swing speed in April and am currently in the mid 130's with lots of control... I think it is harder to gain more speed this higher up you get. For example, it is easier to get from 115 to 120 than from 135 to 140. I am sure that someone disagrees but oh well. That is my take... give it heck!

All you need to do is focus on core and being lean. So start doing yoga and stretching. Forget the weights, it should be obvious that bulking and building strength will do nothing but slow you down!!!

Great post Andy! See you at the Tai Chi class this evening and later we will go have some Red Bull and get a Speed Massage with that special massage oil that makes you fast.

Look what lifting weights has done for Joe Miller, Ryan Louw & Ryan Winther. Building muscle is not a problem, if you can keep your flexibility!

I think that depends on your frame too... If you are on the 'vertically challenged' side of the fence then bulking will hurt you more than someone who is tall and lean. The latter can put on 10 lbs of muscle and not affect flexibility as much. thoughts?

Of course strength training will help you become faster. Lifting weights 90-100% of 1 rep max will make you faster. Or i dunno, maybe im wrong lifting to max everyday. Im slow right?

Everyone has a piece of it right, You have to have a strong core and be flexible, but you have to be strong. The club becomes a part of your body. Your swing goes from the ground up. Really think of it like this. Your body and swing is a rubber band, now if that rubber band is super flexible but not strong you will stretch it out and it will never snap back meaning no power. But if your rubber band is too strong and stiff it wont stretch out meaning no power. Finding the middle of flex and strength is key. The best athletes in the world are strong and flexible. I agree with max power lifting, you want to work on power moves in those maxes, bench, sqt, Dead lift, I even do cleans. Dont max on mirror muscles like bis and such, keep those 8 to 15 reps depending on body type. Do some sort of stretching 2 or 3 times a week, yoga is great, I do p90x stretch and yoga 2 times a week. I am 270 but can still do the splits and touch my palms to the ground bending over (No Prison Jokes). Do 20 to 30 min of core everyday, find a routine that focuses on golf, and get your cardio in. I switch between one day of slow and one day of HITT through the week. And SWING, get a routine just like the gym for the range, over swing, exagg back swing ect ect. If you want your speed to increase each block has to be in place man, it takes time, make goals, eat right, and have a plan. Pat
PM me if you want to talk more or I will email you my workouts.

Alright, here we go.....honestly I hardly work out, I went to the gym a good bit in the summer before the Keystone to lose weight but I really didn't get "Big" or really get any stronger. If anything just a touch more endurance for long hitting sessions. I think the real key for me was understanding why Jamie can do what he does! I might be taller and heavier than him but over all we have a similar platform for our golf swings. Im not gonna say that the key is to swing like Jamie but I was able to recognize that we share similar characteristics in our swings. I figured that if I was able to duplicate it to some degree that I may be able to gain speed and consistency. If you notice, whenever you watch Jamie hit, his swing is almost the same every time no matter if its a miss hit or killed shot, for the most part on balance but completely recognizable from swing to swing. I think a lot of people are too worried about speed as opposed to ability to just make the same swing over and over, trust it and maybe you'll catch one! I have videos with the swing speed monitor, it helps me gauge progress but that not the whole point, I watch my video like its my job to point out everything I want to get rid of in my swing. I know that nerves take over a bit when your on the tee box, but the more bugs you can get out before stepping up the the plate, the less likely they are gonna creep back in. For speed I think it just comes down to understanding where the golf club should be positioned at certain parts of the swing, I don't know how to teach that. The only way I have found to do it is to watch videos in slow-mo and to just commit what you see to memory. Take lots of videos of yourself and focus on improving what you see everytime you video yourself. I hope this helps someone!

I envy those guys with the time and dedication they put in the gym. Myself, I only do some homeexercises like pushups and situps and a few more, the last year. Not much in the gym lately. 2 kids, job, competition and running our big event takes care of time issues.
I do however swing alot. I mean ALOT. Correct technique and trying to swing faster, every session I do. I hit balls every day from July to November. The key is to stay healthy. It is good to be 20, which I´m not, otherwise stretch. Which I don´t
.
I have taken little bits of everything that has worked for me, thrown the rest out. For me as a golfer it has taken almost 3-4 years to adapt to LD. Some are fast from the start. I envy that, but reaching goals is all the more sweet now when the pieces start to come together.
I´m more of a Mansfield guy than a Zuback guy, if you know what I mean. Just not that fast though

Fascinating, that the three most rapidly improving guys in LD - Moose, Mansfield, and Persson, none of them has a big weight routine.
Sounds like they key on flexibility, solid swinging, and lots of fast repetitions!
