There is currently a campaign underway to get golf back into the Olympics (it was last seen in 1904 at the St. Louis Games), however, there is a major concern that most of the talent has too much money at stake and too little time to voluntarily punch a 2 week hole in their schedules to represent their country free of charge.

It occurred to me that in the mould of traditional Olympic events like shot putt, javelin and discus, Long Drive is an ideal sport for the Olympics and unlike normal golf, our athletes are crying out for more events in which to showcase their talents.

In a world where synchronised swimming is recognised as an Olympic Sport, surely anything is possible!

i think that amateur golf in the olipics would be great. Pro golf wouldn't be good at all, as the olympics is supposed to be the main event in a sport, u dont see zidane or ronaldinhio playing olympic football and i 100% guarantee that Woods, Singh, Els etc.... would much rather win a claret jug or a green jacket compared to a gold medal!

Long Drive would be great in the olympics tho, as u say phil - discus, javelin, shot put - the longest person wins - so why not LONG DRIVE?
it would be great for LDers and the spectators!!

it'd sure be better than watching synchronised swimming or horses dancing around to crap music!

You guys are right on that,

Long Driving is really sport what is made for audience, and long drives are in good condition.

Otherwise ball does not go so far.

One thing is that we should do bigger money prices and mor television shows for long drivers, there is good people behind the Long Drivers of Eu and i think that, us players should be behind them also to work this Long Driving to future.

I m sure that Long Long Driving is future sport for audiense, and long drivers are big stars.
Examble Swedish long drivers are good for urge on audience, and there is many players who can do that as well too.

People needs food drinks and cladiattors that is sure.

The 2012 Olympics are coming to London! Time to start lobbying for Longdrive to be that new sport.

I don't know him personally but I've written a letter to Sebastian Coe who definitely has same clout with the IOC. The timing should be quite good as the government are currently investing a lot of money in the growth of golf over here.

A paste of an email correspondence with the LDA for all interested:

Ron:

The Olympic Dream?

Absolutely, that would
qualify as a worthwhile
long-term goal for LDA
to pursue.

In the short term, LDA
is committed to building
its core events: the
RE/MAX WLDC, RE/MAX Jrs.
and Pinnacle Exceptional
Driver Championship.

Building meaning boosting
sponsorships, TV ratings,
competitors, facilities,
hospitality options, etc.

In the intermediate term,
LDA is committed to creating
more events for LDA members
on a par with the recent
Alpha Long Drive Classic
in Des Moines.

Best wishes. Hope to
see you in Mesquite.

Russ

Subject: Olympic Possibilities?

Is there any interest by the LDA in promoting LD as a possible future Olympic sport? and if so, what are the major obstacles?...Ron Freilich

And the follow up:

Good thought, Ron, and duly noted.

Long drive needs more critical mass, more exposure, more sponsors, more competitors,
more fans -- more of just about everything
before any kind of overture to the IOC would be viable or realistic.

To the extent LDA proves successful in achieving its short-term and intermediate-term goals, it will be creating the
dynamics of structure and scope necessary to proceed with such a long-term pursuit.

Best wishes,

Russ

Russ, the reason Im asking at this point in time, that despite the present evolution of the LDA domestically, to which you alluded, the apparently successful growth of the LDA into other international markets ie. Europe, Middle East and Australia (and surrounding environs) under the LDA umbrella (I assume) has established the LDA as a true international governing body,  a major criteria in presenting Long Drive as a competitive sport w/ global appeal with a centralized jurisdiction legitimizing its presentation to the IOC.  All other international olympic sports are similarly governed and thus I assume that LD may now have at least that factor necessary for Olympic appeal.   Just a thought...Ron

I can see you now running thru the crowd looking for anyone to fill up a spot because half your hitters did not show up. Maybe you can just grab another camera man, grid worker, or how about the refreshment lady to hit.

Promote the Olympics  ? HAHAHAHA

By the way I hear your begging for a new USA team and you expect guys to go to Jamaica for FREE.

Blue chip your @ss back to Canada and get a job !

Con man !
